What is Tooth Bonding?
As it sounds, tooth bonding is the act of ‘bonding’ or affixing a tooth-colored composite resin to the tooth. The process, though simple enough, requires an expert amount of skill to make sure the tooth comes out evenly colored and naturally shaped. Unlike veneers, bonding is not done using impressions, but is instead sculpted directly in your mouth right here at one of our offices in Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Citrus Park, Carrollwood, Lakeland, and New Port Richey. Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Susana Kulangara will select a shade of composite resin that matches the patient’s original tooth color the closest. Then, s/he will apply the bonding material to the area that needs to be corrected, such as a gap in the front teeth or a chip in a tooth. The mold is carefully shaped to blend in naturally with the structure of your surrounding teeth. Finally, an ultraviolet light is used to set the bond and then the material will be polished to prevent any irritation from occurring. The entire process is typically done in one visit and can last up to 10 years if properly cared for.
Is Tooth Bonding For Everyone?
Tooth bonding is a popular choice because it is a cost-effective way to repair annoying little issues like minor chips or discoloration in the teeth. While tooth bonding is an excellent procedure that simply requires a candidate with good general oral health, it is not recommended for everyone. Patients who have extensive damage to a tooth or want to correct a whole row of teeth are likely not good candidates and should consider porcelain veneers, instead. However, if you have a small gap or unsightly chip or crack you wish to correct, tooth bonding may be the perfect solution. During your consultation with Dr. Susana Kulangara, or one of our highly qualified associates, you will be able to discuss all your available options so we can help find the best choice for you.
