National Nutrition Month is in full swing. March marks this national holiday as it focuses on nutrition as a whole, and why it is so very important to maintain a healthy diet. Although this applies to many aspects of your body, we are going deeper into how nutrition affects ones oral health.

Down to the root, your teeth are reliant on your consistency with brushing, flossing and everything that takes place in the bathroom. What takes place outside of the bathroom is equally as important when it involves oral hygiene. Some of the most common (and tasty) foods that we eat daily are what present harmful and stubborn bacteria in the mouth.

What foods to watch out for

Sugar is just about your worst enemy when it comes to ingesting various foods. What is funky about sugar is it interacts with the bacteria in your mouth and creates plaque. Plaque contains acids that damage tooth enamel. The bacteria in it can even sneak into the gums and cause painful inflammation. This is very harmful to the development and maintenance of your entire mouth.

Some foods that many do not know contain or turn in to sugar are the following:

  • Potatoes (white and sweet)
  • Breakfast cereals
  • White and brown rice
  • Fruit
  • Other starchy vegetables (carrots, squash, pumpkin)
  • Milk
  • Oatmeal
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Beans
