At Advanced Dental Arts in Wesley Chapel, Citrus Park, Carrollwood, Lakeland, and New Port Richey, we want to make sure all of our patients fully understand the procedures and corrections we recommend to them. Often, our patients ask why they need a crown, and how it works. We recommend dental crowns to our patients

  • If the original tooth is cracked, chipped, or broken
  • If the tooth has too much decay or is too worn; or if it’s extremely discolored or misshapen
  • To cover a dental implant or hold a bridge in place
  • To restore length on worn down teeth
  • To cover and support a tooth that has a large filling
  • To make a cosmetic modification such as closing spaces between teeth, or reshaping or rotating teeth
  • To hold dental bridges in place
  • To cover a dental implant

Dental crowns are used to correct a various imperfections and treat issues with specific teeth. Aside from the restorative reasons we use a dental crown for, we also use crowns for cosmetic purposes on occasion.

Our patients usually ask what their dental crown will be made of, and there is not one specific answer for this. At Advanced Dental Arts, we make dental crowns out of a variety of materials, so it can be different depending on the patient, their needs, and their teeth. We never use a “one-size-fits-all approach, because we know our patients’ teeth are as unique as they are!

Benefits to Dental Crowns

No Staining: Crowns have such a natural look that they are often mistaken for your natural teeth! But as your teeth develop yellow or brown spots and stains from things like coffee, tea, medications, poor oral hygiene and aging, your crowns never will!

No Metal: Since our dental crowns are never made with metal, they are not only natural looking, but toxin-free. Metal crowns can contain lead or mercury, which are both bad for your mouth and overall health.

Longevity: Your crown can last problem-free in your mouth for years, if not decades! However, on occasion a crown can fail due to poor oral health or sudden trauma. The good thing is that as long as there is still enough tooth under the crown, it is easy to replace.

Care for your Dental Crown

Aftercare is an important way to make sure your dental crown lasts as long as possible. Though dental crowns are incredibly strong and durable, there are ways they can become damaged. Aside from your standard, daily oral hygiene habits, here are some ways to care for and protect your dental crown:

  • Avoid sticky and hard foods. Crowns are durable and strong, but they can still be damaged, just like your natural teeth
  • Brush and floss, focusing on the crown
  • Use a night guard
  • Come in to see us at Advanced Dental Arts at least every 6 months, or as soon as you notice any dental issues.
