At Advanced Dental Arts of Tampa Bay, Wesley Chapel, Citrus Park, New Port Richey and Lakeland, we’re happy to serve patients of all ages. Parents are used to telling their kids to take care of their teeth, but it’s important to remember that everyone needs to practice good oral care. As we age, many body parts begin to weaken over time and need more care, and your teeth are no exception! Older adults need to be vigilant when it comes to maintaining oral health. As you age, your teeth can become discolored, hyper-sensitive, or even loose.
With age, tooth enamel can thin, and a buildup of plaque can increase, especially with poor daily habits and oral care. Even with the best care, with age certain deterioration is inevitable. With age, many see that the gums can begin to recede from the teeth and the jawbone can even begin to shrink.
Teeth and your molars are both incredibly strong and can bear down with over 200 pounds of pressure, but after years of that much work they can show wear and tear. After constant chewing, gnawing and grinding, the outer layer of enamel can get seriously worn down. Acidic foods like citrus, fruits or any type of carbonated beverages can also deteriorate the protective enamel. This becomes a serious issue, because weakened enamel can set the stage for more serious dental problems. If your enamel is damaged, you may get cavities, browning or yellowing of teeth, or eventually need some teeth extracted.
Even with years of wear on your teeth, there are a few things you can do to maintain and preserve your teeth. We recommend that our older patients consistently rinse their teeth with fluoride to prevent tooth decay and decrease sensitivity, and switch to an electric toothbrush to get the best possible cleaning. Here are some additional ways you can care for your teeth as you age:
- Brush twice a day
- Brush thoroughly, but gently
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to protect your gums and tooth enamel
- Floss at least once a day
- If you wear dentures, clean them daily and remove them to sleep
- Stop smoking or using tobacco – it will weaken your teeth and yellow them
